Preventive screenings for a long life of healthy, cancer-free smiles!

Each year, around 20,000 fellow Oregonians are diagnosed with invasive cancer, according to the Oregon Health Authority. Some cancers, including oral cavity (mouth) and oropharyngeal cancers, can be highly preventable. Additionally, with treatment early into the disease process, those with oral cancers can go on to enjoy many more rich, quality, healthy years.

Oral cancer screenings: A healthy foundation

Dr. Brad Sievert of Westlake Family Dentistry in Lake Oswego, Oregon, is often on the front lines of detecting oral pre-cancers and cancerous tumors. After all, he is experienced and knowledgeable about oral anatomy and healthy function. And, during routine checkups, he uses this knowledge (and advanced diagnostics) to pinpoint potential abnormalities that require further investigation and possible treatment.

There are many signs that something may be amiss, including:

  • Facial drooping
  • Lumps
  • Swelling
  • Sores that never heal
  • White patches
  • Pain or numbness
  • Bleeding
  • Sore throat or hoarseness
  • Feeling like “something is stuck” in your throat

If you notice any of these signs or have other symptoms concerning you, contact us immediately. Oral cancers can be successfully treated when detected and addressed early into the disease process when the tumor is localized (before it has spread to other nearby or distant tissues).

Also, if you are at elevated risk of developing oral cancer, we will want to visit with you more frequently. We may schedule routine appointments more often than the standard six-month checkup. We will also partner with you to minimize or eliminate those risks, which include:

  • Smoking, vaping, and use of tobacco products
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Smoke and drink alcohol (together, these habits increase your risk of cancer 30-fold!)
  • Obesity
  • Poor diet, nutrition
  • Exposure to UV light from the sun’s rays, tanning beds
  • Lack of consistent oral hygiene

Obviously, we can’t control some risk factors – our genes, for instance. At Westlake Family Dentistry, we believe in controlling what we can. We encourage you to get into a healthy habit today. The first big step in doing so is scheduling routine visits with Dr. Sievert. Call (503) 386-4164 to schedule your appointment at our Lake Oswego practice.

We look forward to meeting you!
